Linking of Social Media Accounts With Aadhaar : Supreme Court pulls Centre

Linking of Social Media Accounts With Aadhaar :
Supreme Court pulls Centre
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday, 13th September 2019, sought the Centre’s formal response in the matter regarding the linking of social media accounts with Aadhar card and said that the issue needs to be decided at the earliest.

The SC bench asked Centre-appointed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta if the government is framing any law or regulations with respect to social media. “We will have to do something if Centre isn't doing anything about the issues here,” the top court said.

It further said that it doesn't have an objection if cases related to linking of social media profiles with Aadhaar that are pending in Madras High Court are transferred to top court.
Following the Supreme Court’s reproach, the Centre agreed to clarify its stand by September 24. The apex court reiterated, “If Centre has some law or regulations in the offing, we will make our decision accordingly."

Social media giants like Facebook has been resisting the state’s suggestion to link Aadhar to social media accounts on grounds that it would violate the privacy of users.

In the hearing last months, Facebook had also said it cannot share the Aadhaar number with a third party as the content on its instant messaging Whatsapp was end-to-end encrypted and even they do not have access to it.

SC reserves judgment on pleas challenging Aadhaar

SC reserves judgment on pleas challenging Aadhaar

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday, 10th May 2018, reserved its verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of Aadhaar and its enabling 2016 law.

A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra directed all the parties concerned to file their written submissions to put forth their case. The judgment was reserved after a marathon hearing which went on for 38 days spanning four months.

A battery of lawyers including Attorney General K K Venugopal, who represented the Centre and senior advocates like Kapil Sibal, P Chidambaram, Rakesh Dwivedi, Shyam Divan, Arvind Datar, Rakesh Dwivedi had appeared for various parties.
The constitution bench also comprised Justices A K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan.

Attorney General K K Venugopal said this is second longest oral hearing in history of the apex court. The longest hearing was of Keshavanabda Bharti case that lasted for 68 days.

During the arguments spread over four months, the Centre had strongly defended its decision to seed Aadhaar numbers with mobile phones, telling the top court that it could have been hauled up for contempt if the verification of mobile users was not undertaken by it.

However, the court had said that the government had misinterpreted its order and used it as a "tool" to make Aadhaar mandatory for mobile users.

Former Karnataka High Court judge Justice K S Puttaswamy and other petitioners had challenged the constitutional validity of Aadhaar.

The court had also not agreed with the government's contention that the Aadhaar law was correctly termed as a Money Bill by the Lok Sabha Speaker as it dealt with "targeted delivery of subsidies" for which funds came from the Consolidated Fund of India.

Aadhaar Card mandatory for those who want entry pass in Airports from 1st January 2017

Aadhaar Card mandatory for those who want entry pass in Airports from 1st January 2017

New Delhi: Aadhaar card mandatory for all who want to take entry pass for airports From 1st January 2017, Central Industiral Security Force (CISF) issues guidelines on Tueday, 27th December 2016.
According to guidelines, Employees at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport will have to carry Aadhaar card to work along with their entry pass from January 1. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which is responsible for the security at the airport, has issued guidelines in this regard to improve the security arrangement at the airport, reports said.
Over 30,000 employees work at the Delhi airport and they are issued Airport Entry Pass (AEP) every year. Sources said, in view of the cases of forged AEPs the security agencies have asked the staff to carry Aadhaar cards as well.

“Since, almost every citizen now has an Aadhaar card, we will make it mandatory for them to carry it. Usually, we just check the airport pass but from now, our staff will ask for Aadhaar card also,” CISF DG OP Singh said.
The CISF is responsible for security at the airport while the Bureau for Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) frames security rules. Last year, the BCAS had changed the format of the pass issued to airport employees. Earlier, employees were given colour coded pass which were replaced with passes with alphabet codes. This year, the passes have been changed again and the size of employee photo has been increased.

“The photo size was small and that is why some cases of fake AEP were detected. We have asked that the size of the photo should be increased and it should be made mandatory to carry Aadhaar card with it,” a CISF official said.
