President Rejects Mercy plea 2nd time
New Delhi: Yakub Memon's lawyers file petition in Supreme Court challenging Maharastra Government's decision to reject his fresh mercy plea today 29th July 2015, even as President Pranab Mukharjee recjects the Yakub Memon's mercy petition after Ministry of Home Affairs recomendation.
After the recommendatio of MHA to reject the mercy plea, Security tightened in Mumbai. Supreme Court earlier rejected the Memon's plea on death warrant saying that there no legal lapses in the proceedngs of earlier curative petition.
The lawyers will also seek stay of the execution saying a fresh mercy plea is pending with the President.
According to reports Lawyers are trying to reach Chief Justice H L Dattu for an urgent hearing tonight.
Meanwhile, the Modi government has recommended rejection of Yakub Memon's fresh mercy plea, and, President Pranab Mukherjee is likely to go by the view of the home ministry.
Gopalkrishna Gandhi appeal:
Meanwhile Former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi urged President Pranab Mukherjee to "reconsider" the rejection of 1993 Mumbai serial blast convict Yakub Memon's mercy plea.
"When the nation is paying solemn tribute to former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, whose conscientious opposition to the death penalty is widely known, I urge you to reconsider the rejection of Yakub Memon's mercy plea," Gandhi said in a letter to the president.
"President Kalam had, as recently as earlier this month, expressed his opposition to the concept of capital punishment. He expressed this opinion to the Law Commission, which has been holding deliberations regarding the desirability and efficacy of the death penalty," Gandhi, the secretary to former president K.R. Narayanan.
Pranab Mukherjee meets Solicitor General
President Pranab Mukherjee meets Solicitor General of India to consult on Yakub Memon's mercy petition. Earlier, Rajnath Singh left for Rashtrapati Bhawan and discussed the issue with the President in an hour-long meeting.
