Now it is official, Rahul Gandhi to contest from Wayanad too
Thiruvanathapuram: It is official. Besides Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, Congress president RahulGandhi will contest from north Kerala’s Wayanad in the Lok Sabha elections.

“All southern states requested the Congress president to contest from their states. After enough deliberations he decided to contest from Wayanad, which shares its borders with two other states, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu,” said senior Congress leader AK Antony at a press conference in New Delhi on Sunday, 31st March 2019.

Upbeat Congress party workers greeted Rahul Gandhi’s candidature from Wayanad by bursting crackers, distributing sweets and taking out rallies in different parts of the state. Braving the sweltering sun in Wayanad, party workers came out to the streets in large numbers to celebrate.

The Congress chief is currently the Lok Sabha member from Amethi and the party has announced that he will be the candidate from the constituency in this summer’s Lok Sabha polls too. But several Congress leaders from southern states have recently requested Gandhi to contest from their regions, claiming this will help strengthen the party’s position.

Wayanad, a rural district that shares its borders with Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, has been a Congress stronghold.

Last week, the Kerala unit chief of the Congress had said that Rahul Gandhi is likely to contest from north Kerala’s Wayanad constituency.

“We have been requesting him (Gandhi) for some time (to contest from the state). When he visited the state in March first week we reminded him again. He is positive about this and a formal announcement will be made soon,” said Kerala Congress committee chief Mullapally Ramachandran.
